On Thursday the whole school celebrated Harmony Day with the theme Everyone Belongs. It coincided with the week for Action Against Bullying and Violence so we discussed this as well. The students all joined together at assembly to sing the Harmony Day song and we wore our orange HARMONY headbands we had made for the event. We came up with a pledge we all signed about not bullying and always including everybody. It was a really worthwhile topic to discuss.

This week 1J did an experiment to see under which conditions yeast works best. We found that yeast needed warm water to be activated and salt seemed to help too. On Friday we used yeast to make some yummy bread rolls. These were eaten at the end of the day with honey and jam. On Thursday we had a visit from local vet Tara and her friendly dog teddy. She taught us about asking 3 times before you pat a dog you don't know: 1. The owner, 2. The adult you are with and 3. The dog letting it smell your closed fist. She taught us about doggy body language. We practised being poles if a stray dog runs up to us and a snail if we get knocked over by a dog. The students listened well and learnt a lot.
As part of our Paddock to Plate Unit in Science and learning about the letter 'i' this week, year one made some yummy icy treats on Friday. We learnt about how pineapple gets from the farm to the tin. We used mango jelly and mixed it with blended tin pineapple and passionfruit. It was very yummy and the perfect way to finish another fun week. Great photography Brendan! We had some new parent helpers this week. Thank you for giving up your time to help in the classroom and we hope to see you again. Thanks also to our existing helpers who come in every week. We really appreciate it and your children will remember it forever.
Year One helped to clean up the school yard on Clean Up Australia Day with all students working hard to make our school a nicer place to be. Students enjoyed a visit from the fire truck on Thursday. Firefighter Kelwyn White taught us about how to prevent fires and what to do if you are in a fire. We also looked at the equipment used in firefighting and had a turn at squirting the big hose. Check out these photos of all students. On Tuesday we were visited by Surf Lifesaver and Riley's Mum Kirsty. She showed us lots of water safety equipment, signs and talked to us about staying safe at the beach. Thanks Kirsty.
